It was carried by the Allan Lines “Arabia” departing from Boston on Aug 19, 1863, arriving at Queenston on Aug 28th, then to Edinburg on Aug 30th.G. W. Hope was a member of Parliament. Described as George William Hope (1808-1863), Politician; Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. He died just a few months after that letter was sent, on 18 Oct. 1863, in Luffness.Letter was addressed to Mrs Hope and research states the Nobility Status described as Hon. Caroline Georgiana Hope (née Montagu-Scott) (1811-1891), Bedchamber Woman in Ordinary toQueen Victoria; wife of George William Hope; daughter of 2nd Baron Montagu andgranddaughter of 3rd Duke of Buccleuch.
